Setting up an SMTP provider can improve deliverability and give you more control over outbound email. If anything is misconfigured, emails may fail to send, throttle, or never reach inboxes. Use this guide to diagnose the most common SMTP setup problems and fix them step by step.

Gmail and Google Workspace can work as SMTP providers, but they require the correct setup to send reliably and securely.
If you hit errors: Verify the provider’s SMTP requirements (server, port, and security method). Depending on Google’s current security policies, you may need an app password or to allow SMTP access on the account.
Microsoft 365 may block SMTP connections unless SMTP Authentication is enabled for the mailbox you’re using— even when two-step verification is off.
Still failing? Your tenant may have additional security policies blocking SMTP. Contact Microsoft support to confirm there are no organization-level restrictions.
Amazon SES requires the correct region endpoint, valid SMTP credentials, and often production access (not sandbox mode) before email will send successfully.
Most common SES causes: wrong credentials, wrong region endpoint, wrong port, or sandbox restrictions.
Free email inboxes (like @gmail.com) aren’t designed for marketing or transactional volume. They typically enforce strict daily limits and may throttle or block if bulk sending is detected.

Go to Settings → Email Services → Add New Service, choose Google/Gmail, authenticate your account, and send a test email to verify the connection.
Microsoft often requires SMTP Authentication to be enabled for third-party apps. Enable SMTP Authentication for the mailbox/account in Microsoft 365 admin settings and confirm the SMTP server and port match Microsoft’s recommended values.
Verify the correct SES SMTP endpoint for your region, confirm the port and SMTP credentials generated by SES/IAM, and make sure the account is not restricted to sandbox mode.
Free Gmail accounts have strict sending limits and may throttle or block activity if bulk sending is detected. For consistency, use a custom domain with proper SPF/DKIM/DMARC and a dedicated sending provider.
Check SPF/DKIM/DMARC DNS records, verify SMTP server/port and credentials, confirm you’re within sending limits, and review content for spam triggers. If problems persist, contact your SMTP provider with logs or message IDs.
