How to Set Up a Campaign and Trigger for Abandoned Cart Follow Up

Build a legacy abandoned cart recovery system using campaigns and triggers to re-engage customers who start checkout but don’t finish.

Important Note About Campaigns & Triggers

Important: Campaigns and Triggers are deprecated. For the updated method, use a Workflow abandoned cart setup (often labeled Workflow: Abandoned Cart or similar).

Abandoned cart sequences automatically follow up with customers who begin checkout but don’t complete payment. This guide walks you through creating a legacy campaign and two supporting triggers: one to add contacts to the follow-up campaign, and one to remove them after purchase.

Step 1: Create the Abandoned Cart Follow-Up Campaign

Start by creating the campaign that will send your abandoned cart messages.

  • Navigate to Marketing → Campaigns.
  • Create a campaign named something like Abandoned Cart Follow-Up.
  • Add one or more events (Email, SMS, Calls, etc.).
  • Include a link back to your order page (example: “Did you forget something?” or “Complete your order”).
  • Add a delay before your first message (commonly 30 minutes, but you can adjust).
  • Save and publish the campaign.

Why the delay matters: It gives customers time to complete checkout (and any upsells) before reminders start.

Step 2: Create a Trigger to Add Contacts to the Abandoned Cart Campaign

This trigger adds customers to the abandoned cart campaign when they complete step one of a two-step order form but do not finish the payment step.

Part 1: Trigger Conditions

  • Go to Automation → Triggers.
  • Click + Add Trigger.
  • Set the event to Two Step Order (or equivalent Two Step Order Form event).
  • Set the filter: Submission Type = Opt-in.
  • Select the correct Funnel and Funnel Step/Page.

Part 2: Actions

  • Add to Campaign: Select your Abandoned Cart Follow-Up campaign.
  • Apply Tag: Add a tag like Abandoned Cart.

Save and activate the trigger.

Step 3: Create a Trigger to Remove Contacts After Purchase

Once a customer completes their purchase, you’ll want to remove them from the abandoned cart follow-up messages.

Part 1: Trigger Conditions

  • Event: Two Step Order
  • Filter: Submission Type = Sale
  • Select the same Funnel and Funnel Page/Step as your opt-in trigger.

Part 2: Actions

  • Remove from Campaign: Select the Abandoned Cart follow-up campaign.
  • Remove Tag: Remove the Abandoned Cart tag applied in Step 2.
  • Add any purchase-related actions you need (tags, confirmations, onboarding steps, etc.).

Save and activate the trigger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of an Abandoned Cart sequence?

It follows up with customers who start checkout but don’t complete their purchase—helping recover missed sales.

Why should I add a delay to the campaign?

A delay gives customers time to complete checkout (and any upsell steps) before reminders begin.

How do I stop the sequence if the customer completes their purchase?

Create a second trigger that fires on Submission Type = Sale to remove them from the campaign and remove their Abandoned Cart tag.

Can I customize the messages in the campaign?

Yes. You can customize emails, SMS, timing, and links back to the checkout page to match your offer and brand.
