How to Create a Custom Date Trigger

Schedule messages and campaigns to fire on a specific calendar date (like holidays or special events) by pairing a Custom Date trigger with a clearly defined audience.

Note

This is a deprecated feature from the legacy Triggers system. No new updates are required, and new automations should generally be built using Workflows instead.

Sending Timely Campaigns Automatically Instead of Manually Remembering Every Date

Businesses often want to send messages for holidays, promotions, launches, or special events, but manually scheduling campaigns every year can become repetitive and easy to forget.

Custom Date Triggers inside BizStackPro automate actions based on specific calendar dates, allowing emails, SMS messages, and campaigns to fire automatically for a defined audience.

Without date-based automation, seasonal campaigns may be missed, audience timing can become inconsistent, and businesses may spend unnecessary time manually recreating the same promotions each year.

This guide explains how to define audiences with tags, configure Custom Date triggers, automate date-based campaigns, and transition legacy trigger logic into modern BizStackPro Workflows.

Before building date-based automations, it helps to understand how audience tags, month/day conditions, trigger actions, and Workflow alternatives function inside BizStackPro.

Overview

Custom date triggers are useful when you want a specific action—such as a holiday message or one-time promotion— to fire on a particular date each year. Common examples include New Year greetings, seasonal promos, or special-event reminders.

Key requirement: A Custom Date trigger needs a defined audience (like a tag or custom field filter). Without it, the trigger usually fires for no one.

Step 1: Define Your Audience

A custom date trigger must have a defined audience. The simplest approach is using a tag applied to every contact you want included.

Create a General Tag

Choose a general-purpose tag that represents your full database or a segment, such as:

  • Database
  • General
  • test (example used in many tutorials)

Create this tag under your contact Tags settings if it doesn’t already exist.

Apply the Tag to Contacts

Make sure every contact you want included has this tag. You can:

  • Bulk-add the tag using Bulk Actions in the Contacts section.
  • Auto-tag via automation (for example, add the tag when someone enters a specific campaign/workflow).
  • Add the tag during import when uploading contacts into BizStackPro.

Important: Without a defined audience (tag or custom field), BizStackPro assumes the trigger applies to no one, not everyone.

Step 2: Create the Custom Date Trigger

Access the Trigger Builder

  • Go to Automation → Triggers.
  • Click + New Trigger.

Configure Part 1: Conditions

Set your trigger type and date filters:

  • Choose Custom Date Reminder as the trigger type.
  • Add date filters:
    • Month Is: Select the month (example: December).
    • Day Is: Select the day (example: 31).
  • Add a Has Tag filter and select the audience tag from Step 1.

This ensures only contacts with that tag are included when the calendar date matches your Month/Day settings.

Reminder: If you only choose Month/Day and do not define a tag or custom field, the trigger will not fire for anyone.

Configure Part 2: Actions

Decide what should happen when the date condition is met:

  • Add to Campaign: Enroll contacts into a prebuilt campaign (example: a holiday follow-up sequence).
  • Send Email: Send a one-time announcement (example: “Happy New Year”).
  • Send SMS: Send a text greeting or time-sensitive alert.

You can combine multiple actions (for example, send an email and add the contact to a follow-up campaign).

Activate the Trigger

  • Click Save after configuring Part 1 and Part 2.
  • Change the status from Draft to Activate.

Once activated, BizStackPro evaluates the date and audience daily and fires on the matching Month/Day for contacts with your selected tag.

Best Practices and Use Cases

  • Holiday campaigns: New Year’s, Black Friday, seasonal promos.
  • Anniversary messaging: Use custom fields + Workflows for more advanced date logic.
  • Global offers: Run a one-day promotion for everyone tagged in your primary database segment.

For new automations, replicate this logic in Workflows for more flexibility, better logging, and long-term support.

Schedule campaigns around important dates

Use date-based automation to keep your audience engaged year-round—then build future versions in Workflows for maximum control and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a custom date trigger used for?

It fires actions on a specific calendar date—like sending a holiday message or starting a one-time campaign.

Why do I need to define an audience with a tag?

Without a tag or custom field filter, BizStackPro treats the audience as empty, so nothing fires.

Will a custom date trigger send to my entire database automatically?

No. It only runs for contacts who match both the date conditions and your audience filter (like a shared tag).

Can I use more than one custom date trigger?

Yes. Create separate triggers for different holidays, launches, or dates throughout the year.

Should I use Triggers or Workflows for new automations?

Triggers are deprecated. For new builds, use Workflows for more options and long-term support.

Timely messages. Better engagement.

Date-based automation helps you stay relevant—whether you’re sending a holiday greeting, launching a promotion, or reminding contacts about a one-day event.
